Urai or Uray (Russ. Урай) is a Uralican city, located in southwestern Yugra country, roughly halfway between Kuiksk and Mezhdurechenskyy on Highway UH-34.

It was founded in 1922, but population began taking off upon the discovery of oil in the area in the late 1950s and early 1960s. City status was first granted in 1965, but after the fall of Old Russia in the Cataclysm and a sharp population drop, this was revoked.

The settlement was nearly completely abandoned around the Unjust War when the oil ran out. With nothing to drive the economy, only a stubborn few stayed, fortunately for Urai's future. Forestry would be a temporary solution, however it was the fateful discovery of a relatively small seam of coal in the area that brought the city back to about half its former size - geologists discovered metals behind it.

After the initial rush in mid-2008, the town continued growing slowly as the metallurgical industry expanded in the town, with small pockets of oil being found here and there for exploitation.

It was after Uralica annexed the town in the fall of 2009 that growth accelerated again, mainly due to the fact that by then, the nation had a stable trade agreement that brought imported oil in from the Aethiopian Empire, meaning that the refineries could open up again while the new industries could stay running. Nowadays, mining, metallurgy, oil refinery, and forestry are still the top industries, although machine-building and the production of road-building materials are also important.

Culture[]

Demographically speaking, Urai's population is primarily Russian and Finnish ethnicity-wise. There are minorities of Hungarians and Permyak-speaking Komi in the city as well.

As a relatively new settlement, Urai doesn't have the rich history of some locales in Uralica, although it is known that the area was Mansi territory before the Russian Empire claimed it. There is a historical museum in the city, although a great deal of that is dedicated to the oil and gas industry.

One thing that does draw attention to the city, though, is the local drama troupe, "Yunost."
