The Birth of the Imperium[]
In the spring of 2007, an odd man by the name of Siegmund Adalwulf appeared in København, where he began to attract a growing number of followers to his religiously inspired politics. He preached the need to transform humanity through virtuous labour and the denial of the ego in favour of the Absolute. In a few months time, he organised a veritable exodus of young, bright men and women from all over northern Europe to a small island just off the Scandinavian coast. They brought with them a boatload of religious texts, such as the Upanishads, the Gospel of Thomas, and the Bhagavad-Gita. Local authorities denounced the group as a dangerous cult and had law enforcement agencies monitor the steadily growing compound on the isle, apparently out of fear for terrorism or mass suicide. Shortly after the last boat of cultists arrived, their leader declared the island a sovereign state, which would henceforth be known as Sacrum Imperium.
The Rise of an Empire[]
Surprisingly, none of the Scandinavian governments intervened at first, as the island didn’t represent much economic or strategic value and the cultists had maintained a rather low profile. To protect the growing community against the possibility of future intervention from Scandinavian authorities, Siegmund Adalwulf joined the North Atlantic Defense Coalition, thus ensuring a measure of international recognition for the newly founded state. Aside from financial assistance from the NADC, the trade in technological information, such as blueprints, turned into the most important economic lifeline. Most of the Imperium’s trading partners were fellow micronations, rogue states and other unconventional polities.
During these early stages of development, the initial compound sprawled into a number of hierarchical communes, operating collective farms and a handful of mines. Former policemen from Stockholm and København cooperated with former soldiers from the UK to train and organise people’s militias, which would be capable of defending the Imperium in case of foreign intervention. Before long, the island’s bay was cleared out and developed into a harbour, greatly enhancing the communes’ capacity for trade.
As the island’s economy stabilised and developed, the Imperium turned its eyes towards the European mainland and began to expand through a process of land acquisition and colonisation. In less than two months after the declaration of independence, the first compounds under the Imperial flag could be found on the Swedish and Norwegian shores.
