The Province of Sweden (German: Provinz von Schweden) is a province of the Duchy of Brunswick. The province is made up of the former Kingdom of Sweden. It is bordered by the provinces of Norway and Finland. Its capital is Stockholm.

History[]

Olaf Sköttkonung became the first king of Sweden that was Christian in the 11th century. An attempt was made to unite Norway, Sweden, and Denmark in 1400, but this led to bitter strife between Denmark and Sweden. King Christian II of Denmark conquered Sweden in 1520 and put Swedish leaders to death. Gustavus Vasa founded the modern Sweden on Reformation doctrines after breaking away from Denmark. Sweden gained western Pomerania and neighboring Baltic territories in the Thirty Years’ War with the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. Sweden lost Livonia, Ingria, Estonia, and some of Finland with the Peace of Nystad extended to them by the Russians, Polish, and Danes. Sweden gained Norway in the Napoleonic Wars with the crowning of King Charles XIV. The unification of Sweden and Norway lasted until 1905.

Sweden became a part of the Duchy in 2010.
