A Protectorate is where a large alliance agrees to defend a smaller one from attack. It differs from an Mutual Defense Pact in that if the larger alliance is attacked, it is not usually expected for the protectorate to help. Protectorate treaties can differ between alliances in that some protectors exercise and ask for more control over their protectorates than others.
