The Pionieretruppe (Engineer Troops) support the Prussian Army by providing specially trained and equipped personnel for the primary duties of construction (building fortifications, bridges and installations) and demolition (breaching obstacles, reducing fortifications and clearing minefields. Secondary duties that support the combat effort are surveying (strategic and tactical analysis of terrain features and structures) and protected forces employment (firefighting and underwater operations)

The Pioniere have many important duties, both combat and non-combat related. Because missions and duties are so variable, the Pioniere has many different specialities withing the branch. These specialities are organised into four basic fields (related specialities within a branch). These fields are known as Construction, Mapping, Combat Engineering, and Protected Forces. Protected Forces work in extremely hazardous conditions that require special equipment for breathing and protection. All Pionere are trained first as Combat or Constuction Engineers, before being trained in Mapping or Protected Forces.
