The North American Commonwealth is a nation in North America.

Geography[]

The North American Commonwealth is a land-locked country in the center of the North American Continent. It includes the former US states of Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri.

History[]

The North American Commonwealth developed after the collapse of Pravus Inguro, a large North American nation that spanned much of the southeastern United States after its collapse. After its formation, the North American Commonwealth was considered a partial successor to the United States of America. At that time, its capital was Washington, D.C. and all of the former United States government buildings were standing and used for similar functions. Prior to the Grand Mexican War, the NAC controlled the areas of Alabama, Arkansas, Cuba, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Ontario, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Wisconsin. It was second in size only to the Caribou Federation.

At the conclusion of the Grand Mexican War, Washington was bombed heavily and the NAC collapsed. The NAC was a federal government, and the state administration in Missouri was strong. In 2086, only about a year after the war had ended, a new government was formed using the same constitution, using Kansas City as the capital. Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas soon joined the new government.

In 2167, North America was largely divided into three spheres of influences by the Augustine Empire, Cascadia, and J Andres as a result of the Savannah Accords[1]. The North American Commonwealth was not a part of the accords, and quickly in the following years butted heads with Cascadia over the areas between the 110th and 104th meridians. This led to war between Cascadia and the NAC in 2170[2]. The NAC was financially and logistically supported by J Andres and the Augustine Empire[3]. In the war, Cascadia struggled to overtake the NAC outpost in Denver, and the NAC, aided by J Andres Special Intelligence, were able to land a devastating blow to a Cascadian airfield in Frisco[4]. After that attack, Cascadia looked to resolve the border dispute diplomatically. Elsie Huang and Anthony Cole met in Salt Lake City, and agreed to establish the 107th meridian as the border between the nations[5].

Government and Politics[]

The North American Commonwealth is a federal republic. Every four years, the citizens elect a President (4 year terms) to lead the executive branch. The congress consists of the House of Representatives (2 year terms) and the Senate (6 year terms). A Supreme Court consists of justices appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

David Bronson was elected the first President in 2045. He was elected to serve five terms, but resigned in 2062. His vice-president, Charles Nelson succeeded him until his term ran out in 2065. Nelson decided not to run in 2065, and Sean Bronson, brother of David, was elected. After Sean's election, the Congress amended the constitution to limit Presidents to no more than four terms in office, which was in place until 2170[6], when it was removed to support Anthony Cole's reelection.

Foreign Relations[]

The North American Commonwealth is eager to prove it is not a waning power on the continent. Prior to the 2160s, the North American Commonwealth was naturally close to its allies from the Grand Mexican War: the Republic of California and North Mexico; however, the NAC is the only nation remaining. The NAC is closest to Detchitoria which it has a strong trading relationship with. The NAC is skeptical of the Savannah Accords nations, the Augustine Empire, Cascadia, and J Andres, but is also eager to join the Accords.
