Νέα Βυζάντιον (called "Νέα Ρώμη" (Nēa Romē) by the native population. Literally "New Rome")
New Byzantium is a tiny, under developed, and new nation at 5 days old with citizens primarily of Greek ethnicity whose religion is Christianity. It is a backwards nation when it comes to technology and many refer to it unkindly as a 'Third World Nation'. Its citizens enjoy freedom from high taxation and as a result tend to earn more money. The citizens of New Byzantium work diligently to produce Pigs and Furs as tradable resources for their nation. The government has no definite position on foreign affairs at this time. It believes nuclear weapons are necessary for the security of its people. The military of New Byzantium has been positioned at all border crossings and is arresting all drug traffickers. New Byzantium allows its citizens to protest their government but uses a strong police force to monitor things and arrest lawbreakers. It has an open border policy, but in order for immigrants to remain in the country they will have to become citizens first. New Byzantium believes in the freedom of speech and feels that it is every citizen's right to speak freely about their government. The government gives foreign aid when it can, but looks to take care of its own people first. New Byzantium will trade with other nations with questionable ethical treatment of their citizens but prefers to keep such trade agreements a secret.
The year; 2009. The setting; the crumbling Hellenic Republic. The story begins with the crumbling Hellenic Republic. It failed its people with its tendencies of pacifism and after the crumble of the EU, Greece was left hanging by a thread. The Slavs in the historic land of Macedonia were moving in from the northwest, Albanians from the west, Bulgarians from the northwest, and worst of all; Turks moving in from the east. Convinced that Republicanism had failed them, a revolutionary band of Greeks joined together. Their tenants; Orthodoxy, Hellenism, Monarchism, and Capitalism. Their goal; re-make the Byzantine Empire. They had opposition of course. The various Communist and radical Socialist parties banded together who also wanted to take up the ruins of Greece and form a "Democratic Republic of Greece". Of course you also had the Greek Republicans who wanted to keep the government together, and the less popular Greek fascists who were much like the Imperialists, except they promulgated fascism and economically communism, whereas the Imperialists wanted a democratic Constitutional Monarchy.
