Montsa (Russ. Мончегорск, SkSaam. Monće) is a Uralican city in Sapmi county, located on the shores of the Imandra Lakes.

The name "Montsa" is actually the Finnish name for the city, with "Monchegorsk" having been the former name, derived from "Monce," the word for "beautiful" in the now-extinct Akkala Saami language. Akkala's closest relative, Skolt, retains this name for the city.

The area is best known for mining and non-ferrous metallurgy, with the two most common metals in the area being copper and nickel. However, because of copper production, the area is also a well-known producer of electrical equipment, especially electrical wire, and also, hi-tech consumer goods.

Formerly one of the most polluted towns in the Former Soviet Union region, mass cleanups and industrial upgrades sponsored by the Uralican government have greatly improved the quality of life in the area.

Culture[]

As the Finnish name would imply, Montsa's largest ethnic group is Finns, with Russians coming in a close second. Although the territory is traditionally Akkalan-Skolt, though, the Saami group in largest numbers nowadays is the Kildin ethnolinguistic group, with 95% of the Kildin mother-tongue population in the world living within 10 km of the city.

There are a few museums of note in Montsa, like the municipal history museum and the "Museum of Coloured Stone." There is also the Kildin Language Revitalisation Centre, to which "language geeks" from all over Uralica come to study the Kildin language. Through this centre, some 25% of people from Montsa's non-Kildin population speak the language fluently.

As with Apatity and Polar Dawns, Montsa sits on the Imandra Lakes, making it a popular spot for water sport.
