Liga Mundo is the Cybernations association football (soccer) league and it adheres to the principles of tradition, prestige and professionalism. It was originally established as more of a club championship tournament format run independantly by Costa Libertad - but over time became affiliated with the four Transvaal World Cups, the now-defunct UCFA Champions League, and various domestic leagues in the CN-X11 system such as the Ark Premier League, Nordreich Liga, Grand Lodge League, and Mostly Harmless League. By Season 4 the league had established itself as the primary professional soccer league based in Cybernations.

Liga Mundo expanded operations in April 2008 with the formation of the Serie Primera and the addition of the Serie Segunda in Season 2, and then three months later with the addition of the Serie Tercera in Season 3. Starting with Season 8 in April 2010, the divisions were renamed Primera Liga, Segunda Liga, and Tercera Liga respectively with the all-new Cuarta Liga added. During later consolidation, the Cuarta Liga was dropped.

Currently the league has 33 member clubs as it heads into its 40th season. The league's first peak season for membership was in Season 8 when 36 teams took to the field in a sudden burst of expansion teams joining in the wake of Transvaal World Cup IV of March 2010. Consolidation then followed in the subsequent seasons since then before stabilising at 24 teams (with eight teams in each of the three divisions) at the start of Season 13. Since then for the following 18 seasons, the league generally remained in the 20 to 24 range for member numbers. With the addition of African Premier League clubs in Season 31, the league would more than double in size by expanding to 54 teams.

Four of the clubs - namely Arcadia FC, Atlético Luz Del Mar, VolNation Volunteers, and Transvaal Springboks were known as the Original Four - participated in each and every season played from Season 1 until Season 13 when Atlético Luz Del Mar were transferred to Marseilles FC. The first three clubs (minus Transvaal Springboks) were popularly referred by all as the Big Three during the early days of the league on account of their notable dominance on and off the field from immediately when the league started. One of the most dominant teams during the early days of the league, Arcadia FC would later suffer from management woes and ownership changes; during Season 18 the former management of Atlético Luz Del Mar took over the club and re-branded it as Clube Atlético Santos. The former ownership of Atlético Melloria would then come along take over Clube Atlético Santos at the start of Season 20.

The Springboks became competitive after unexpectedly winning the league championship in Season 5, but struggled on the pitch for the league's first three seasons. In Season 7 Swamplandia Sinners became the first expansion, non-original club to win the league title; they repeated as champions in Season 9 to cement their status as one of the top clubs.

With the advent of Swamplandia Sinners' two championship titles, much less emphasis has been given since then to the Big Three or Original Four as a collective powerhouse of teams than in the early seasons of the league - especially more so since Arcadia FC were demoted after Season 12 and Atlético Luz Del Mar relocated and were subsequently relegated to the Segunda after the following season.

PremierApex of Costa Libertad (Atlético Luz Del Mar) resigned as commissioner / league admin during Season 8 on May 5, 2010 and appointed Botha of Transvaal (Transvaal Springboks) as his replacement.

On June 13, 2013 (during Season 17) the league increased the maximum roster limit from 20 player to 23 players. Later that season, on August 30, 2013, Commissioner Botha announced that the entrance requirements for the Liga Mundo Hall of Fame would be increased from 100 matches to 200 matches starting in Season 18.

Prior to the start of Season 20 the three divisions were renamed LM Primera Liga, LM Segunda Liga, and LM Tercera Liga on June 28, 2014.

On the eve of Season 28, with the disbandment of the VolNation Volunteers on February 4, 2017, the Liga Mundo Hall of Fame was closed at Neyland Stadium in VolNation. During Season 29 Commissioner Bartnel Botha would canvas for a new location to host and re-open the hall. Since the folding of VolNation Volunteers, the Transvaal Springboks now remain as the only original club to have played each and every season with their original team identity.

At the mid-point of Season 30, the reality of the African Premier League joining Liga Mundo in a league merger re-surfaced as a viable possibility - after earlier discussion had been buried prior to the start of Season 25. Two days later on February 22, 2018, Liga Mundo Commissioner Bartnel Botha took over the reigns of the African Premier League and announced to both leagues they would merge at the conclusion of their current seasons - with the APL clubs joining Liga Mundo as expansion teams in new divisions.

After over a year (and three seasons) of closure, the Liga Mundo Hall of Fame was relocated to Loftus Versfeld Stadium, home grounds for the Transvaal Springboks, and re-opened on February 23, 2018.

On April 27, 2018, the African Premier League (APL) submitted its application to merge into Liga Mundo and 34 of its clubs joined the following day - bringing league membership to an all-time high of 54 managers and clubs. The APL itself had absorbed the Kamenoi League (KL) four seasons prior and the International Mauritius Foundation (IMF) / AF Sabugal League (AFSL) six seasons prior, but had dealt with instability from frequent changes with the league administrators. A third league which lasted 27 season under numerous name changes - Erasmus Premiership (3 seasons); Basalt Super League (7 seasons); Casela Gold League (1 season); Blue Line Premiership (2 seasons); Dalpuri Dewa League (1 season); Savate Dodo Football League (2 seasons); Biskwi Manioc League (4 seasons); Independence League (1 season); Sousoudansdal League (1 season); Ti Pois Sunny League (1 season); LMLC League of Moris (4 seasons) - was absorbed at some point by either the KL or IMF/ASFL Leagues prior to their merger with the APL. Liga Mundo's historical roots now branched out and went back to five separate leagues.

Prior to the start of Season 35, the league lost one of its three-remaining original clubs when Atlético Melloria folded on October 7, 2019. The club had been founded as Arcadia FC and played in the Arcadian Empire for seventeen and a half seasons - later transferring to Costa Libertad and playing a season and a half as Clube Atlético Santos. Then in the off-season leading up to Season 35 the club was relocated a second time, transferring to Melloria for a re-birth of Atlético Melloria. The disbandment of the Arcadia FC / Clube Atlético Santos / Atlético Melloria franchise left just Transvaal Springboks and Marseille FC as the last remaining clubs founded back in Season 1.

Heading into its its 40th season, the league consolidated into three Liga divisions when the Cuarta Liga was dropped. The lowest division had seen a depletion of teams in the previous few seasons and it became difficult to maintain viable upper divisions.

The league underwent its most radical restructuring in Season 43, when the LM3 Tercera Liga and LM2 Segunda Liga were merged together into two parallel Segunda A Liga and Segunda B Liga which each then fed two promotion teams into the Primera Liga. The changes were made to better withstand divisional instability when lower teams folded and were dropped by the league.

League MVPs[]

Prior to Liga Mundo Season 6, the League MVP came only from the Primera Liga. Starting with Liga Mundo Season 6, players in all leagues were eligible. From Liga Mundo Season 9 through until Liga Mundo Season 20, the award was selected by manager vote amongst the divisional MVPs as selected by the commissioner. Starting with Season 15, the Lois Luis MVP Trophy was awarded to the League MVP when the trophy was renamed on October 20, 2012 - the day after Lois Luis's departure after 15 seasons in Liga Mundo. In Liga Mundo Season 21, after a decrease in manager voting, the commissioner selected the league MVP along with the divisional MVPs.

The UCFA Champions Cup was founded in Liga Mundo Season 18 as a replacement competition when the El Invierno Clásico tournament was officially retired on December 18, 2013 - although its last occurrence was played back in Liga Mundo Season 7. The new open cup tournament, honouring the pioneering CN football manager of the former Arcadia FC club, maintained the same random draw 1-game series as El Invierno Clásico.

On April 16, 2014, during Liga Mundo Season 19, Commissioner Botha retired the remaining seasonal cups and the UCFA Champions Cup became the sole, second cup tournament of the season. The move was made to bring more consistency to the cups from season to season.

Detlef Botha Trophy

One of the most infamous awards in Liga Mundo, the Detlef Botha Trophy was unveiled at the end of Liga Mundo Season 18 to mark the departure of veteran Transvaal Springboks midfielder (and current manager) Detlef Botha, who retired at the conclusion of Season 18 as the all-time league leader in collecting yellow and red cards.

Player and Team editions of the Detlef Botha Trophy are handed out to both the player and the team in Liga Mundo which best exemplifies the rough and tough playing style of Detlef Botha's career. The awards handed out each season by the commissioner are old wooden baseball bats with nails and spikes protruding from the end – again, exemplifying the nasty and punishing playing style of Detlef Botha.
