Grand Besaid, officially the Democratic Christian Republic of Grand Besaid, is a nation located in Asia, comprising most of South and South East Asia. Grand Besaid’s capital and largest city is Besaid. Grand Besaid is a member of the Mostly Harmless Alliance and of the Aqua Trading Organization. Dynasty, the ruler of Grand Besaid, is also the primary founder of the nation.
It is borded by the Indian Kingdoms to the far north west, Tibet to the central north west, the South China Confederacy to the central north east, the People's Republic of China to the far north east, the Indian Ocean to the west, the Philippine Empire to the south east, and both the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean to the East.
Grand Besaid is a large and rapidly growing nation whose people are devoted to their faith of Christianity. The people of Grand Besaid seek spiritual enlightenment and are very happy with what they have. Grand Besaid is said to be a very kind nation with very intelligent and wise citizens of great diversity and kinships. Grand Besaid is also devoted to being a very peaceful nation in service to its faith and its alliance; only going to war as a means of defense or for the good of its alliance.
Grand Besaid's population was 18,532,675,197 as recorded by the last national census. The official languages of Grand Besaid are English and Latin. While English is the most commonly used language, and the language used by virtually every citizen, Latin is an acceptable language for a number of official procedures and documents. Latin being an official language is also used as a justification for allowing people who speak a Latin based language, such as French, Spanish, and Italian to be entitled to a means of communication and translation while in Grand Besaid as mentioned in acts of the National Assembly. Grand Besaid is officially a federal constitutional republic. Grand Besaid has five states, those of Oyen, Olgmar, Tesuma, Zukumi, and Adinoa.
Etymology[]
Besaid comes from the name of the most prominent tribe, and the agreed upon name of the collective tribes of the different nomads during the founding of Besaid, the capital of Grand Besaid. How the name of the tribe and of the collective tribes came to be is shrouded in mystery and legend. Seeing how Besaid was the center of the nation and the center of the former empire, which once engulfed the nation, it was thought that the nation was the great, or grander, region whose center was Besaid. Thus, the nation was given the name of Grand Besaid by the founding fathers of the nation.
Geography[]
The environment of Grand Besaid is one of the best in the world, even the largest of cities respect the environment and nature, this causes Grand Besaid to be able to produce and maintain huge populations, as seen by the last census. The great size and of Grand Besaid, and the pristine condition of its environment causes there to be a great diversity throughout Grand Besaid, this is especially easy to observed through the states of Grand Besaid.
Oyen[]
Oyen, the largest state by both land and population, is the center of the nation, and is home to numerous mountains, miles of rainforests, and serene tropical beaches. Oyen is well known for its mountains and large cities like Besaid and Sentara. Oyen is also known for its great historical value, and many times it is considered both the epicenter and birthplace of the nation.
Olgmar[]
Olgmar, or the western forests and sometimes the natural state, is home to endless deciduous and tropical rain forests. Olgmar is also home to great amounts of mineral wealth which is spread throughout its natural beauty. Monasteries are a common sight because of the natural state and seclusion of Olgmar.
Tesuma[]
Tesuma is an area of vast webs of islands stretching all around the eastern and central bays of Grand Besaid. Tesuma also consists of a large coastal area in the eastern portions of Grand Besaid. This region is famous for its tropical climate and wealth. As such, it is a major tourist destination and a great place for enjoying tropical wilderness. Tesuma is divided into reserves and settlements by strict perseveration laws, which prove to be very effective at regulating traffic and growth, and maintaining the great condition of the environment.
Zukumi[]
Zukumi, or the eastern islands and coast, are an area of bizarres. Remaining here are many ancient ruins and cities, some of the oldest in the world. This is hard to believe, considering how the islands and regions vary here, some are tropical, some are dense deciduous forest, others are desert, others are mountainous, and still others are grassy or snow covered year round. Scientists have yet to find a good explanation as to why this is, but believe it has something to do with the many currents and weather patterns that surround the region.
Adinoa[]
Adinoa is the tropical southern coastal region of Grand Besaid. It Is the second most populous state and is home to one of the best climates and some of the cleanest waters in the entire world. It is well known for its cruises and exotic cities like Mathoa. Adinoa has been constantly rated as one of the top tropical destinations to both visit and live.
History[]
Founding of Besaid and the Besaidian Empire[]
- Main article: History of Besaid|Besaid#History|History of Besaid
Besaid was founded some three thousand years ago by nomads seeking to worship God without being persecuted. The Besaidian people, being under constant invasion from their neighbors, built massive walls by combining their unique crafts together in order to protect themselves and allow them to prosper in their city. These walls lead to great prosperity and the makings of a republican empire, an empire that would stretch across most of the eastern world. As an empire, Besaid was a center of trade and economic prosperity; its constant expansions caused it to be the largest and most powerful empire in the entire world. After flourishing for well over two-thousand years, the empire slowly shrank into a mere regional nation, being only a few possessions away from being a city-state at its lowest point.
Conquest of the Coalition of Nations and Eperyllian Occupation[]
After more than two millennia of power and might, the Besaidian Empire was weak. This weakness was seen as an opportunity by its long time enemies, who banded together to form a coalition of nations which was able to conquer the wilting Besaidian Empire.
This coalition of nations was very unorganized and quarreled amongst itself constantly. This allowed for a large, neighboring empire to swoop in and take control of Besaid and the surrounding areas which are today Grand Besaid. For a few hundred years, the Empire of Eperyllia occupied the city of Besaid, and the nation it would later be capital of. While the occupation began out as easy and fine, it quickly escalated to become a nightmare for the Besaidian People. This eventually lead to Besaidian session.
War for Independence and the Founding of Grand Besaid[]
- Main article: Grand Besaidian War for Independence
Early in the War[]
The Grand Besaidian War for Independence took started out with the Empire of Eperyllia oppressing the people of Grand Besaid and later issuing the New Act of the Besaidian Providence which caused further oppression and tyranny. As the people of Grand Besaid began to protest and rebel against the act and the Eperyllian Empire in general, violence started to break out. Immediately, Dynasty and other early Grand Besaidian leaders issued a declaration of independence.
The Battle of Besaid[]
Not long after Grand Besaid’s declaration of independence, Eperyllia sent a large number of troops to besiege the city of Besaid in hopes that it would cause the revolution to come to a halt. The Besaidians, however, came up with an ingenious system of tunnels that allowed for supplies and men to get around the Eperyllian forces without them knowing. While this proved useful for negating the siege, it did not help them to physically fight the Eperyllians. During the siege, wave after wave of Grand Besaidian artillery and infantry were launched against Eperyllian forces without much success. Both sides were sustaining heavy casualties, but the Grand Besaidians were taking far more casualties. Dynasty and Norman Isable, after seeing this over and over, devised a plan to create a force that would surely prove victorious.
The two founded the Knights of Besaid, an elite military force to combat the Eperyllians; they gathered members from all over the revolting nation. During the Battle of Besaid, the Knights of Besaid acquired and trained some 1,750 highly elite members for combat. These “Knights” managed to push the Eperyllian forces far out of the city, and even across their own border in a mere matter of days. The Knights of Besaid not only used their brutal skills and strength to fight, but also their cunning strategy and knowledge of traps and terrain warfare. These "Knights" were so well known for their protection and loyalty to Besaid and Grand Besaid as a whole, that they were officially proclaimed "The Protectors of Grand Besaid" after the revolution. This title would help to establish their three specific modern duties: the protection of Grand Besaid, the guarding of dignitaries, and the performance of difficult and elite tasks. Not only did the battle play a major role in the founding of the Knights of Besaid, but it also gave the rebellion a useful tool for recruiting efforts, using the attack to show Eperyllian cruelty and the victory to show Grand Besaidian strength.
The Rebellion's New Direction[]
Soon after the attack on Besaid, the first leaders organized a transitional revolutionary government and begin to organize the military forces of the emerging nation. At first, the military forces had outdated equipment and little training. As such, many of the early battles of the Grand Besaidian War for Independence ended in defeats for the Grand Besaidians. As battle after losing battle was fought, many began to question Dynasty's leadership and the rebellion itself. Almost as soon as Dynasty's leadership was questioned and his popularity plummeted, foreign funds were finally granted by several nations through loans and aid; loans and aid that Dynasty had been working tirelessly to secure.
These new funds allowed Grand Besaid to revitalize its armed forces; some nations even aided Grand Besaid with weapons and training equipment, both of which were in short supply. For the next four years, the war seemed as though it would never end with both sides pushing into each other's territory, before losing their newly captured territory and having the other side push into their core territory. All the while, Eperyllia continued to push for the surrendering of all Grand Besaidian forces, promising to spare the lives of the soldiers who surrendered. Their ploy was largely unsuccessful.
A New Plan and Victory[]
Soon, the government of Grand Besaid was finally able to develop a plan that would allow them to be able to take over the capital of Eperyllia, Odeusaga, by besieging it. The plan called for a straight march and assault upon some of the most fortified areas in all of the Eperyllian Empire, followed by an attack from three different directions. The plan was approved by the provisional Senate of Grand Besaid after only two days of deliberation.
After a few victories and a restored confidence in both Dynasty and the rebellion, the plan was ready to be put into action. Luckily for the Grand Besaidians, a typhoon slammed into the region that they were about to attack, devastating many of the Eperyllian encampments, forts, and reinforcements. This allowed the Grand Besaidian forces to easily conquer many of the obstacles that had faced it, marching all but twenty of the two-thousand miles to the Capital of Eperyllia with little resistance.
With twenty miles to go, one of the last battles of the war broke out, the Battle of Uda. The battle lasted for a mere three hours and was a quick victory for Grand Besaidian forces. After the battle had ended, the Grand Besaidians continued their march to Odeusaga, only stopping upon reaching the city's walls. The siege and various planned attacks were implemented and left the city in ruins after only two months. The emperor of Eperyllia, facing certain defeat, agreed to recognize Grand Besaidian independence and pay reparations for the war.
The Counter Strike[]
After a mere six months of peace, the Empire of Eperyllia and its few allies attempted to take Grand Besaid back under its control and sent forces across Grand Besaid’s border. Within hours, the forces were crushed and Grand Besaid sent their own forces across the Eperyllian border, the Grand Besaidian forces met little retaliation and eventually conquered Eperyllia, making it part of Grand Besaid. This operation was to be known as the Counter Strike.
First Republic[]
Not long after Grand Besaid gained its independence, it had to create a permanent government. The provisional, revolutionary government, led by Dynasty, called for a small constitutional convention consisting of loyal rebel leaders, lawyers, and professors. After long deliberations, and lengthy planning, it was decided that Grand Besaid would become a republic.
The First republic’s executive branch consisted of an Executive Triumvirate consisting of a Mosunor, a President, and a Chancellor. The Mosunor was both the head of state and the head of government, while the president was the deputy head of state, and the chancellor was the deputy head of government. Many executive decisions had to be made by the entire triumvirate, and, sometimes, the potential lack of agreeing caused problems during crises. All three members were elected to varying terms.
The tricameral legislature consisted of a House of Representatives and a Council of Elders which, together, formed the National Assembly. The National Assembly was responsible for the federal budget, and for the passing of laws and regulations. The third house, the House of Censors, was more of an investigative house, acting as a "team of prosecutors against the federal government". The entire legislature was elected to varying fixed terms.
The judicial branch also continued the trait of being unordinary large, consisting of a giant Supreme Court of nineteen members. The Supreme Court was responsible for the interpreting of laws, and for the exercising of judicial review. The Supreme Court was partially elected and partially appointed by the state legislatures. The National Assembly created inferior courts, though with the advice of the Supreme Court.
The first republic also contained a fourth branch, the Auditable branch, which consisted solely of the Council of Auditors. The Council of Auditors was responsible for the auditing of laws, officials, and departments, trying to improve and investigate them. The Council of Auditors also watched over the bureaucracy while the National Assembly was out of session.
The first republic was seen as a rather weak republic, having little power and much confusion. It came about mostly because of people's fears of a strong, powerful central government. Because of this, and the over sized government itself, the republic was constantly under fire for being too slow and not reactive enough, even powerless at times.
Almost immediately after Grand Besaid ceded from the Eperyllian Empire, the nation began to seek out allies and friends. Grand Besaid’s leader, Dynasty, soon found the Mostly Harmless Alliance. On June 1, 2009, the National Assembly of Grand Besaid voted unanimously to join the Mostly Harmless Alliance. Grand Besaid has been a member ever since.
Economic Boom and the Banker Push[]
Soon after the independence of Grand Besaid, a huge wave of immigrants sprawled in from all over the world, and the native population of Grand Besaid expanded vastly on its own. The combination of these two factors lead to Grand Besaid having a tremendously large population that began to increase exponentially. This great and very constant increase allowed Grand Besaid to accumulate tons of capital and expand its work force before inflation hit, thus allowing its economy to exponentially increase.
The combination of the population and economic boom allowed Grand Besaid to begin producing goods at unfathomable rates, and create advanced technologies not previously seen. The careers of engineers, inventors, and industrial workers boomed the greatest, though every field saw a great increase. As well, this time saw an increasing amount of missionaries and clergy; this not only helped to meet the spiritual needs of the growing population of Grand Besaid but it also helped to spread their faith of Christianity.
This economic boom coincided with Grand Besaid’s Banker Push, which began on October 5, 2009 as sponsored by the Mostly Harmless Alliance. It ended roughly 20 days later and allowed Grand Besaid to not only Purchase a Stock Market, its first wonder, but also increase and greatly develop its infrastructure and technology. This, on top of its previous economic expansion, would lead to a future chapter, known as the Technological Empire.
Civil War[]
- Main article: Civil War of Grand Besaid|Civil War and Monarchial Conquests of Grand Besaid|Civil War of Grand Besaid
After the Banker Push had ended, and Grand Besaid became a stable economic powerhouse, there was a great dispute as to how Grand Besaid should be governed. A growing faction was becoming more and more cynical of the republican government and desired a more direct democratic system; these individuals were commonly known as Democrats, and made up roughly half of the entire Grand Besaidian population.
The other half of the Grand Besaidian population was in favor of keeping the first republic, or founding a second one in a peaceful manner from the first one. Thus, the debate began to rage on as both sides tried to push for their agendas. Before long, these mere debates raged into protests from the Democrats, as the nation became more and more divided. Prejudice and quarrels broke out between the groups, and the Democrats were determined to escalate the violence. The Democrats began trying to take over public buildings in the state of Oyen, and before long, the two sides, the Republicans and the Democrats, split the nation in two as war broke out between them.
The Civil War was fought between North-Western Grand Besaid and South-Eastern Grand Besaid, with North-Western Grand Besaid being in favor of keeping the republic, and South-Eastern Grand Besaid in favor of direct democracy. The Civil war started out as a standoff between two sides using trench warfare, this standoff caused millions of deaths, and was seen as a grimmer front than the western front of World War One. Eventually, both sides realized that the standoff was not going to end by mere trench warfare, and that is when both sides began to use extreme naval force to attempt to break the ends of each other’s trench lines through naval bombardment. However, both sides’ plans were soon crush as they began using their naval powers to simply fight the other’s navy.
Eventually, the Civil war of turned into one of mixed strategy, with each side constantly focusing on trying to outdo the other somewhere else, constantly changing their primary mediums of assault while still trying to keep up on the others. Before long, North-Western Grand Besaid’s much larger population began to show as North-Western Grand Besaid began to slowly outdo South-Eastern Grand Besaid on every front and in every field. This led to North-Western Grand Besaid launching a forward invasion into South-Eastern Grand Besaid’s territory, a move that South-Eastern Grand Besaid could not seem to counter, as North-Western Grand Besaid progressed faster than South-Eastern Grand Besaid could build new defenses.
At this time, North-Western Grand Besaid offered peace talks to South-Eastern Grand Besaid. However, South-Eastern Grand Besaid Refused. Their refusal led to North-Western Grand Besaid marching onward to South-Eastern Grand Besaid’s capital region. It was at this time that South-Eastern Grand Besaid made one last attempt at victory, causing the Battle of Tuembreli.
The Battle of Tuembreli began with an ambush on North-Western Grand Besaid’s forces, and continued as the remainder of North-Western Grand Besaid’s army marched a small way up the road to meet the large fortifications prepared by South-Eastern Grand Besaid’s forces. The battle lasted for two months, and narrowed down North-Western Grand Besaid’s forces to about one-twelfth of their original numbers before North-Western Grand Besaid was able to break through the defensive line using a bombing run and a ground assault.
South-Eastern Grand Besaid’s defeat at the Battle of Tuembreli led to North-Western Grand Besaid besieging the capital of South-Eastern Grand Besaid, followed a the declaration of surrender by South-Eastern Grand Besaid. Grand Besaid was once again unified under the old republic, and economic prosperity soared even higher. Every part of the former South-Eastern Grand Besaid was rebuilt and became stronger than it ever was before the war. A declaration of common history, signed at the start of the war, preserved the old ruins and landmarks in Grand Besaid during the war.
Monarchial Conquests[]
- Main article: Monarchial Conquests of Grand Besaid|Civil War and Monarchial Conquests of Grand Besaid|Monarchial Conquests of Grand Besaid
The Monarchial Conquests are known to be the darkest time in all of Grand Besaid’s history, and they were a time when Grand Besaid was at war with its self, becoming split into four factions. Outside of the republican faction that wanted to keep the status quo, the factions came up as grassroot movements, led by supporters in favor of changing the way Grand Besaid was governed.
The former rebellious regions that were destroyed in the civil war were now rebuilt, and were once again advocating for direct democracy. Two new groups, one in the far south east, and the other in the far north west, were in favor of a monarchy to try and turn the nation down a less progressive and more conservative path. The northwestern faction favored Nommaai Nueamaninia as the monarch, while the southwestern faction favored Oubbousi Buechanhan as monarch.
As the republican government refused to consider the other three faction’s new forms of government, the three factions began to protest, and eventually revolt. The First Republic’s weak powers were hardly enough to control the rebellions, and before long, Grand Besaid was once again at war with its self.
Elimination of Factions[]
Both the monarchial factions and the republican faction created an alliance to disperse the direct democratic region, seeing it as the greatest threat to their objectives. It was at this time that support for pure direct democracy died down, and that many of the “democrats” joined the republican cause as more liberal republicans.
After rising tensions, King Oubbousi and King Nommaai went to war. King Oubbousi immediately sent a barrage of units to attack Nommaai's territory, inflicting great damage on the outskirts of Nommaai’s territory. Nommaai, in retaliation, sent his most elite unit, the Royal Guard, assisted by his Royal Marines to Oubbousi’s border regions. The battle lasted a mere seven hours, and concluded with Nommaai being victorious.
Upon hearing the news of his loss, Oubbousi sent his own Royal Guard and Royal Marines into the fray; he managed to barely defeat Nommaai's fatigued forces, preventing them from finishing the redoubt they were building on their newly conquered lands. This would prove to be Oubbosi's only victory during the war. Nommaai then launched a grand push, which would eventually end up causing Oubbosi’s defeat, though only after a great deal of resistance. After conquering Oubbosi’s former kingdom, Nommaai appointed him governor over the region, a move that would allow him to have enough trust to integrate the region into his own kingdom.
New Phase of the Conquest[]
After Nommaai took over Oubbosi’s kingdom, only two factions were left, the republican faction, and Nommaai’s monarchial faction. Nommaai was set on turning the nation into a monarchy under his rule, and thus began to assault the republican faction’s territory. His troops were met with fierce resistance at the border, and were quickly routed.
Upon learning about his defeat, Nommaai decided to gather up every troop and able-bodied male of his and launch a full-fledged assault on the republican faction. The offensive would last four months and leave him mere miles from the republic’s capital, though it would inevitably end in a crushing defeat.
After this defeat, a huge blow was dealt to Nommaai’s ego, and he began to consider a compromise after re-evaluating the situation. His compromise was simple: Allow him to have a co-rule alongside Dynasty in the republic, while a new republic would be created. This was a popular idea for more than one reason, for not only would it end the war, but it would also assure the creation of a new and better republic. The republic narrowly accepted the compromise, and Nommaai was inaugurated as President after a long chain of resignations and replacements to accommodate him; afterward, he was proclaimed co-ruler of Grand Besaid.
Second Republic[]
- Main article: Second Republic of Grand Besaid
After an extremely short co-rule, Nommaai and Dynasty called for a constitutional convention and invited all sorts of delegates from past and current officials and lawyers to catholic clergy and small business owners. The major problems were how to balance liberty and protection, how to give representation to the states, whether to have a parliamentary system or a presidential system, and what role Christianity would play under this new system. They were also fearful that a new, more powerful republic might end up causing the fall of their economic prosperity from over regulation.
During the convention of the second republic there was also a strong movement to make Dynasty the King or Emperor of Grand Besaid in a ceremonial or limited sense of the idea, similar to the Emperor of Japan or the King of Spain. However, Dynasty refused the idea, killing the debate quite quickly.
The convention lasted a mere two weeks and two days, and only one delegate left early. They resolved that they would model their republic after a combination of the generic presidential system, the previous republic, and the state government of Adinoa. This caused a single executive, presidential system, with a bicameral legislature and a Supreme Court. They decided to eliminate the Council of Auditors, and instead, give the legislature the option to form a committee to do the same.
The system was an excellent compromise between the several groups of republicans; and the direct democratic systems like the referendum, the initiative, and the recall even appeased the few remaining democrats. Not only did it make a stronger central republican government, but it also set the foundations for the modernization of Grand Besaid.
Technological Empire[]
After Grand Besaid's banker push and modernization, and along with its second republic, it was in a position for something new. The new government, with the advice of Dynasty, came up with the project idea of turning Grand Besaid into a “Technological Empire”.
What that meant was that Grand Besaid was to become a breeding grounds for the development of new and useful technology, importing many of the needed resources from other small countries. This project would allow the technological field to develop well over ten times faster than a country would without such a plan. This plan would be carried out through tech deals.
While the state led "technology deals" were just starting, as were technology grants and major booms in private research. Such great strides were made in technology that the nation was even able to develop a space program, nuclear weapons, high tech aircraft, high-grade computers, and an assortment of other high-tech technologies.
Because of Grand Besaid's immense jump in technology and status, it went from being known as a third world country to a first world, top rate nation in less than a decade. This incredible jump in technology, combined with the many recent inventions and discoveries in Grand Besaid has given it the nickname the "Tech Nation" by much of the rest of the world.
Second Unjust War[]
- Main articles: Grand Besaid in the Second Unjust War, Second Unjust War
During the Second Unjust War, Dynasty, being the Deputy Minister of Destructor Fleets at the time, played a crucial role in the organization and preparations of the Mostly Harmless Alliance. He also lead Grand Besaid to war against a number of targets, and even saw the nuking of his nation during the war. Grand Besaid engaged numerous targets from IRON, GGA, Echelon, NADC, and MCXA during the war, dealing great amounts of damage to each of its targets.
Today[]
Grand Besaid continues to advance, keeping strong to its roots as a free, progressive, and Christian nation. It continues to be innovative and plans to develop even more wonders and to grow substantially in the coming years. Grand Besaid's head of state and government, Dynasty, intends to keep Grand Besaid in the Mostly Harmless Alliance for many years to come. The current fourth republic has shown to be more stable and progressive than the previous republics, and appears to be around far into the future.
Government and Politics[]
Grand Besaid is a federal constitutional republic, its head of state and government is a President. Grand Besaid’s federal government has three branches those of Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. Each state also has its own government, as does every city and every region. Grand Besaid's government is said to be the most honest and least corrupt in the world as cited by numerous studies.
Constitution[]
- Main article: Constitution of Grand Besaid
The current constitution is the second constitution that has been ratified by Grand Besaid. It is the framework for the second and current republic and is the highest law of the land. It is seen as a new and modern republic, even taking up elements of the former first republic. Overall, the constitution is the supreme legal document of Grand Besaid and one of great importance.
The first article of the constitution lists the rights of the people, and is commonly referred to as the Bill of Rights. The second article creates the frame work of the Legislative Branch of Grand Besaid, while also giving it powers and listing its limits. The third article descrbies the Executive Branch of Grand Besaid, and the fourth article calls for and creates the structure of the Judicial Branch of Grand Besaid. The last three articles relate to the states and other subdivisions, to the amendment process, and to general provisions not otherwise listed in any other article.
Legislative Branch[]
- Main article: Legislative Branch of Grand Besaid
The federal legislative branch is a bicameral legislature, consisting of a House of Representatives and a Council of Delegates. Both houses are directly elected by the people through varying districts and methods. Together, the two houses are known as the National Assembly.
The National Assembly passes laws, appropriates funds, declares war, signs treaties, and does most of the functions expected by a legislature. Grand Besaid's National Assembly is very similar to the legislatures of most presidential republics in the fact that the houses are nearly equal in power and importance.
The House of Representatives currently consists of 2987 members, each of which are elected to terms of two years by electoral districts of near equal population through first past the post elections. The Council of Delegates currently consists of 2676 members, half of which are elected by the entire nation through open list propotional representation, and half of which are elected by entire states through open list proportional representation; members of the Council of Delegates serve terms of four years.
Executive Branch[]
- Main article: Executive Branch of Grand Besaid
The federal executive branch is centered around the President and Vice President, though the executive cabinet and other administrative officials also make up the executive branch. Both the President and the Vice President are directly elected by the entire nation to terms of four years.
The President, currently being Dynasty, is the head of state and government, and is also known as the Mosunor, a term carried over from the First Republic. The President is the commander in chief of the armed forces of Grand Besaid, and is also the chief diplomat of the country. The President has the power to veto resolutions of the National Assembly, and submit them to a popular referendum. The President is also responsible for the appointment of nearly every executive and administrative official in the federal government.
The Vice President is the deputy head of state and government, and is the presiding officer of the Council of Delegates; however, the Vice President can only vote in instances of a tie. The Vice President can also be delegated additional authority by the President; currently, the Vice President is also the deputy commander in chief and the deputy chief diplomat of the country. The Vice President is also a member of the executive cabinet, and commonly oversees the various ministers and departments of the executive branch.
The Ministries of Grand Besaid represents the core of the bureaucracy of Grand Besaid, and their respective ministers represent the core of the executive cabinet of the nation. The Ministries run the day-to-day operations of the Grand Besaidian government, and create regulations that build upon laws passed by the National Assembly of Grand Besaid.
Each ministry is headed by its respective minister (i.e. the Ministry of Defense is headed by the Minister of Defense), and a Ministerial Commission. While ministers are nominated by the President and approved by the National Assembly, members of ministerial commissions are partially elected by the national electorate and partially appointed by the President and the National Assembly. Currently, ministerial commissions consist of eleven members and their minister; ministers are the presiding officers of their ministerial commissions.
Ministers and their commissions hire the majority of high and mid-level staff not appointed by the President or National Assembly, or elected by the people. Ministers and their commissions also direct the operations of their ministry, create regulations pertaining to the jurisdiction of their ministry and overview the audits of their ministry. Ministers and their commissions are directly responsible to both the President and the National Assembly.
Judicial Branch[]
- Main article: Judicial Branch of Grand Besaid
The federal judicial branch consists of the Supreme Court and the inferior courts. The Supreme Court holds the power of judicial review, and acts as the ultimate appeals court; it also decides high profile cases using original jurisdiction. The judicial branch is responsible for interpreting and reviewing the laws of Grand Besaid. It is also responsible for the handling of trials and appeals.
The constitution mandates that the Supreme Court consists of fourteen members, selected to terms of fourteen years, with one being chosen every year. Seven Supreme Court justices are elected by the entire national electorate, one every even year; Seven Supreme Court justices are appointed by a legislative commission consisting of delegates from both the National Assembly and the state legislatures, one every odd year.
Elections and the Electorate[]
The citizens of Grand Besaid are granted the right to vote at age eighteen. Elections, referendums, initiatives, and constitutional amendment votes occur every year on the federal, state, and local levels. However, the greater majority of state and federal officials are only up for election in even numbered years. Election Day is October 17, and officials' terms start on December 2.
The people also hold the powers of initiative, referendum, and recall on all levels of government; as well, the people retain the right to amend the national constitution by a three-fifths vote. The National Constitution also guarantees the right of the people to amend their state constitution; though it also protects many other rights such as the freedom of expression, the right to bear arms, and the right to life.
All Elections are conducted using secret ballot, as is mandated by Article I, Section III of the Constitution of Grand Besaid. Ballots are counted three times, once by a team of local officials, once by a team of state officials, and once by a federal scanning commission. All three counts must be identical, otherwise, a recount is automatically required. Freedom House rates Grand Besaidian elections as "Free", and considers Grand Besaid an electoral democracy.

Currently, the major parties are the Besaidian Christian Party, the Besaidian Democratic Party, the Besaidian Republican Party, the Besaidian Liberal Christian Party, the Besaidian Constitution Party, and the Besaidian Green Party. However, there is also a growing Independent Movement which is pushing for independent candidates, rather than those of a specific party, citing that the political parties cause too many unnecessary conflicts and partisan issues that are detrimental to the well being of the people and the nation.

Each state is further divided into counties, the majority of which are based on the former regional provinces of the Besaidian Empire, the administrative districts that were one step below provinces. Counties are further divided into cities and townships, which may further divide themselves as they see fit. Each city also has its own government, charter, flag, and administrative powers.

Grand Besaid is known for its generosity to small, foreign nations, and for its tendency to import vast quantities of technology.
Grand Besaid has been known to be a generous nation when it comes to aiding smaller nations in its alliance and its allies. Previous to Grand Besaid's Banker push, Grand Besaid produced and sold technology to larger nations, the opposite of what it has been doing lately as it now imports tech rather than exports it.
Grand Besaid is a member of Project CityConnect and the United Nations, though the Mostly Harmless Alliance is by far the most influential organization. Grand Besaid is open to joining other international organizations, and is occasionally a major player in international affairs.

Military Branches[]
The current branches of the Grand Besaidian Military are the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the National Guard, and the Knights of Besaid.
The Grand Besaidian Army, also known as the Army of Grand Besaid, consists primarily of the ground forces of Grand Besaid, and is the most well known of the various branches of the Grand Besaidian armed forces. The Republican Guard, Grand Besaid's second most elite military group, is also part of the Grand Besaidian Army. The Grand Besaidian Navy, also known as the Navy of Grand Besaid, consists primarily of the naval forces of the Grand Besaidian armed forces. However, smaller, more elite, and flexible forces such as the Navy Seals find their way into the navy's command structure. The Grand Besaidian Air Force, also known as the Air Force of Grand Besaid, consists primarily of the aerospace and aviation forces. It is also in charge of all extraterrestrial military equipment such as military satellites.
The Grand Besaidian National Guard, also known as the National Guard of Grand Besaid, consists of air, land, and naval forces. Its primary objective is to defend the domestic territory and citizens of Grand Besaid. The National Guard is unique in the fact that it is the only military branch that regularly enforces laws and regulations during peacetime. Its departments include the Border Patrol, the Coast Guard, the Militia, and the National Defense Initiative. The latter of which is a semi-militia, semi-professional military force that is responsible for the defense of local sections of Grand Besaid at a moment’s notice. The Militia of Grand Besaid consists primarily of citizen volunteers who own arms of some sort or another who volunteer to help defend their locality against invasions and insurrections; the militia is rarely called into active duty. The Coast Guard provides maritime services, enforces maritime laws, and guards the coastal waters of Grand Besaid. The Border Patrol guards the land borders of Grand Besaid; it also enforces some immigration laws.
The Knights of Besaid are a highly elite branch of the Grand Besaidian armed forces, known as the most elite in the entire nation, and one of the most elite in the entire world. They also act as the ceremonial military of Grand Besaid, participating in many events and ceremonies on behalf of the entire military. During peace, the Knights of Besaid generally guard dignitaries. They are similar to the ancient Aztec Jaguar warriors and Eagle warriors in the fact that they are both a highly elite and ceremonial military branch.
Economy[]
Grand Besaid’s economy is superbly developed, its technology is first rate, its infrastructure exceeds the needs of its people, and the nation’s Gross Domestic Product is ranked as one of the highest in the entire world.
Transportation[]
Grand Besaid has many systems of transportation, from the widely popular automobile, to the newly reviving train, to the greatly expanding form of air travel, all the way to the public and private sectors of space exploration.
Grand Besaid has used the automobile for roughly a century, with the current ratio of people to automobiles in the country being that for every five people there are three automobiles. Even early on, Grand Besaid did not want significant amounts of smog in its larger cities, so it had mandated that all automobiles get at least 100 miles per gallon; surprisingly, such regulations were complied with in a relatively short period. More recently, Grand Besaid has transitioned into the world's first hydrogen economy, and thus has had little need for such regulations.
The average price for an automobile in Grand Besaid is about 8,000 Grand Besaidian Dollars (37,600 Euros). Because of the widespread ownership of vehicles, the interstate and freeway systems across Grand Besaid are superb, being of immense quality. Currently, Oyen has an interstate speed limit of 75 miles per hour, Adinoa has an interstate speed limit of 80 miles per hour, Olgmar has an interstate speed limit of 85 miles per hour, Tesuma has an interstate speed limit of 70 miles per hour, and Zukumi has no interstate speed limit except for a fluctuating one near its major cities. Zukumi's interstate is comparable to Germany's autobahn in that respect.
While the major cities of Grand Besaid like Besaid, Sentara, and Khatalia have extensive public transit systems, the rest of Grand Besaid mostly relies on automobiles and private aircraft for transportation. However, even a number of smaller towns have subways and public busing. Regional public transportation is greatly expanding with a good example being the "bullet train" tracks that are popping up across the nation. In addition, millions of miles of new train tracks are being built each year which are going in side by side with the refurbishment of much older train tracks; large portions of standard train tracks are also being converted into high-speed rails.
Airplanes and air travel were introduced commercially to Grand Besaid at roughly the same time they were introduced in the United States. Currently, air travel is a booming industry, with a 1200% growth rate in just the last five years alone. Over 600 new airports are under construction in the state of Oyen, and over 1200 are under construction nationwide. Over 2,450,000 people are licensed to be commercial pilots, and just fewer than 37,670,000 have permission to fly private aircraft. While Grand Besaid's government has participated in a few international space projects, the industry of space exploration is larely left open to private enterprises within Grand Besaid, alluring many companies and billions of dollars to the Grand Besaidian economy.
Energy[]
Renewable sources of energy dominate Grand Besaid's energy market. Nearly 100% of electricity comes from renewable sources with 34% coming from solar power, 32% coming from wind power, 15% coming from run-of-the-river hydroelectricity, 13% coming from geothermal power, 4% coming from tidal power, and 2% coming from biomass. Power plants that utilized fossil fuels within Grand Besaid were phased out within the last few years, with many having been converted into biomass power plants or geothermal power plants. Nuclear power plants are currently banned in Grand Besaid, though one was open for less than one week, and Grand Besaid will not accept nuclear waste from other countries.
Roughly 67% of automobiles run on hydrogren fuel, while about 23% run on electricity. Virtually all trains and monorails, both ordinary and high speed, run on electricity or hydrogen fuel, though a few antique and vintage models still run on diesel or coal. A plurality, roughly 48%, of watercraft runs on hydrogen fuel, 24% run on biofuel, 20% run on electricity, and 7% run on fossil fuels. 96% of domestic aircraft run on hydrogen fuel, with nearly 4% of the remaining domestic aircraft running on biofuel; large portions of foreign aircraft still run on fossil fuels, causing airports in Grand Besaid to still have to stock up on them.
Grand Besaid currently produces roughly 12,317 petawatt hours of energy per year. Roughly 10,627 petawatt hours are used by the entire nation of Grand Besaid in the span of one year; leaving 1,690 petawatt hours to be exported to other countries such as China, Japan, the United States, and Australia. According to Grand Besaid's Ministry of Energy, Oyen is the largest consumer and producer of energy of any state; Adinoa comes in a distant second for both categories. All five states have recently invested large sums of money, through grants and loans, into finding and creating new forms of energy and applying them to every day products. Forms of energy that are currently being investigated under such grants include rain and humidity, anaerobic digestion, fusion, and non-hydrogen chemical reaction fuel cells. Grand Besaid is almost energy independent and plans to become such within the next few years as it finally phases out fossil fuels and completely becomes a hydrogen economy. Grand Besaid is also the world's second carbon neutral state, with the Vatican City being the first.
Income and GDP[]
Grand Besaid is one of the strongest coutnries in the world, ecnomically speaking, having a Gross Domestic Product of 1,720,999,816,819,011 Grand Besaidian Dollars. This is attributed to a number of factors including the nation's enormous population, the friendly business climate, and the diligence and determination of Grand Besaidians. Other factors include the rather low national taxes, the massive national market, and the huge number of grants and funds given to fund private business and research by the government.
Grand Besaid's Gross Domestic Product is also reflected in the nation's median annual income of $87,456, the low unemployment rate of 0.4%, the low poverty rate of 0.6%, and the strength of the nation's currency; a single Grand Besaidian Dollar is worth roughly 4.7 Euros, and is one of the strongest currencies in the world.
Science and Technology[]
Grand Besaid has a vast Science and Technology sector, having numerous patents, nearly seventy-one million, mostly relating to aviation, electronics, robotics, computers, medicine, and space equipment. Grand Besaid has also made huge strides in military technology, including aircraft, tanks, armor, and nuclear weapons. One of Grand Besaid's biggest scientific contributions comes in the form of new energy technologies including improvements on solar and wind technology, and the creation of non-hydrogen fuel cells.
Grand Besaid is also a major player in space programs, having both public and private space exploration; this year, four manned missions to Mars have been accomplished, six to the moon, and two to asteroids, all of which were funded by private corporations. The public space administration, the Grand Besaidian Ministry of Space Exploration or GBMSE, sends delegations to the International Space Station and unmanned probes to the outer reaches of the solar system.
Grand Besaid has one of the highest internet connections per capita in the world, having more internet connections than people. The average internet connection in Grand Besaid is also one of the fastest in the world. The Grand Besaidian government is forbidden from censoring the internet; as a result, it is host to a number of political websites.
International Trade[]
Grand Besaid is open to international trade, and a great deal of private imports and exports occur daily; Grand Besaid will not trade with nations that have a history of treating their citizens poorly, and commonly enforce international trade sanctions. Grand Besaidian tariffs have been criticized as being rather high, but the government insists such tariffs are in place to protect domestic business. Some of the major imported resources include Aluminum, Water, Lumber, Coal, Iron, Oil, Marble, Lead, Fish, and Rubber.
However, the need for foreign Coal, Oil, Lead, and Water is decreasing heavily as Grand Besaid is becoming more energy independent, finding new forms of energy such as solar, wind, gravitational, and bonding. The need for imported water is also decreasing as water purification and reverse osmosis technologies are improving. Two of the biggest exports of Grand Besaid are Gold and Wheat. Other major exports include automobiles, electricity, space equipment, airplanes, ship vessels, electronics, computers, medicine, medical equipment, microchips, titanium, uranium, diamonds, copper, zinc, and rice.

On November 12, 2011, Grand Besaid developed a Hidden Nuclear Missile Silo, which will allow it to possess more nukes, conceal its nukes better, and protect its nukes more proficiently, all of which are highly useful for nuclear wars. On December 12, 2011, Grand Besaid built its last wonder for the year 2011, the Agriculture Development Program, which greatly increased food production in Grand Besaid and, subsequently, its quality of life and number of exports.

With Grand Besaid's high and outstanding commitment to green energy, the true wonder was that it was actually built. Unsurprisingly, it was closed shortly after it opened and has now become a museum, but more than that, it has become the icon of government waste for fiscal conservatives in the country.

Education is free from grade school to a person's fourth year of college; thus, making it free and easy for the average person to receive a Bachelor's Degree. Many scholars believe that the current low percentage of people who have attained a Bachelor's Degree is because many of the middle-aged and elderly citizens of Grand Besaid are not going back to school to earn one.
