The Province of Macedonia (German: Provinz Mazedonien) is a province of the Duchy of Brunswick. The province is made up of the former Republic of Macedonia. It is bordered by the provinces of Albania, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Greece. Its capital is Skopje.

History[]

Modern-day Macedonia takes up the western part of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia. The kingdom was defeated by Rome and became a province in 148 B.C. The fall of the Roman Empire left Macedonia to be ruled by the Byzantine Empire until the Ottoman Empire occupied Macedonia in 1371. The Ottomans ruled over Macedonia until 1913. Macedonia was divided up again under the Treaty of San Stefano in 1878 when half of the country was given to Bulgaria, only to lose it again in the Second Balkan War to Serbia and Greece. Serbia united with Croatia, Slovenia, and Montenegro to create a kingdom in 1918 which became Yugoslavia in 1929. Bulgarians occupied part of Macedonia during World War II. The Yugoslavian federation was reestablished in 1945 and made the Vardar territory autonomous in 1946. Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.

Macedonia became a part of the Duchy in 2009.
