The Province of Slovenia (German: Provinz von Slowenien) is a province of the Duchy of Brunswick. The province is made up of the former Republic of Slovenia. It is bordered by the provinces of Hungary, Italy, Croatia, and Austria. It also borders the Adriatic Sea. Its capital is Ljubljana.
History[]
The Illyrian and Celtic settled modern day Slovenia before the Romans conquered the territory in the first century B.C. The Slovenes settled Slovenia in the 6th century A.D. The Slavs established Samu in the 7th century until Charlemagne conquered the area in the 8th century. The Turks defeated the Hungarians, allies to Samu, in 1526. Hungary accepted Hapsburg rule the same year to escape Ottoman rule. Slovenia became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1867. Slovenia declared independence after World War I before joining in with the Montenegro, Serbia, and Croatia in 1918. This nation became Yugoslavia in 1929. Yugoslavia was occupied by the Germans during World War II and became part of Germany, Italy, and Hungary. Slovenia became a republic of Communist Yugoslavia after the defeat of the Axis in 1945. Slovenia introduced a non-Communist government in 1990 and declared independence in 1991.
Slovenia became a part of the Duchy in 2009.
