The Republic of Detchitoria, or more commonly, Detchitoria, is a nation in North America centered on the Great Lakes and the cities of Toronto, Chicago, and Detroit.
Geography[]
Detchitoria included the entire former state of Michigan and portions of the states or provinces of Ontario, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.
History[]
Prior to the Grand Mexican War the territory of Detchitoria was controlled by the North American Commonwealth. At the conclusion of war, the Washington-DC-based government collapsed, and city governments were typically the law of the land. While the North American Commonwealth would continue based in Saint Louis, Toronto, Chicago, and Detroit became independent cities.
In the 2130s, the Free City of Pittsburgh became an independent nation, Alleghenia. In the 2140s, the Free City of Monterrey was conquered by the Augustine Empire. The governments of Toronto, Chicago, and Detroit identified that the League of American Free Cities was not a strong enough coalition to withstand the new pressures on the continent. The governments of all three cities were democratically elected, and while their economic systems varied, the governments determined that that had more in common than different. In the early 2150s, the nations began meeting and discussing the terms to come together. These terms were finalized in 2152, and Detchitoria, taking the first three letters of each city was formed. Detroit was selected as the capital based on its approximate central location between the other two cities.
In the 2160s and 2170s, Aurelia began investing heavily in Detchitoria, building a salt water port in Moosonee[2], purchasing a significant stake in DMC[3], and growing mining operations through Cordoban Minerals[4].
Government and Politics[]
Detchitoria is a federal republic with a representative democracy, largely modeled off the former North American Commonwealth. A president serves as the head of the executive branch, and the legislative branch is bicameral. The most significant difference is that the federal government is limited on its ability to tax, reserving certain rights for each of the three cities which had vastly different political systems at the time of formation.
Foreign Relations[]
Detchitoria's strongest ally is the North American Commonwealth. Detchitoria also has a positive outlook on Cascadia, Acadia, and J Andres. Detchitoria has a neutral outlook on Alleghenia and Ottania. Detchitoria has a negative outlook on the Augustine Empire.
